Celebrities From Hornell

The first, and native Hornellian, born December 17, 1953, is actor Bill Pullman, star of more than 40 films including "Spaceballs", "Ruthless People", "A League of Their Own", "Wyatt Earp", "Sleepless in Seattle", and "Independence Day" among others. He even had a part in "The Thin Red Line", but his scenes were deleted. The breaks of Hollywood. Bill has visited Hornell on many occasions since acheiving fame, and seems to be real down-to-earth and not spoiled by success. That's nice to hear and totally understandable, he is from Hornell after all.

The second is actor Bob Crane, who was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. Bob began his show business career in Hornell as a DJ on Hornell radio station WLEA. After leaving WLEA Bob went on to become the highest paid DJ in the nation. He was then offered the starring role in a new television show and went on to become "Colonel Hogan" in the hit television series, "Hogan's Heroes". Bob was, unfortunately, murdered in 1978 under mysterious circumstances in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Frank Kelly Freas, legendary science fiction artist and creator of Mad magazine's Alfred E. Neuman was born in Hornell on August 27, 1922. In addition to Mad magazine covers, the award winning Freas created hundreds of illustrations and covers for innumerable books and magazines. Among the more interesting of his works are the nose art illustrations he created for U.S.A.F bombers, and the cover art he created for Queen's album News of the World. Freas received 20 Hugo award nominations and won ten times, more than any other person.

Another native Hornellian is John Keel, (born March 25, 1930), author of the novel "The Mothman Prophecies" which was made into a movie in 2002. In addition to the writing credit, John also has an acting credit in the TV production, "Search for the Mothman", a documentary based on his book.

Michael McGruther, an aspiring actor and writer was born in Hornell on June 16, 1972. Michael has appeared in three major Hollywood productions including "In and Out" with Kevin Kline (Michael was student #5 in the credits), and "Clockers" (teenager #3). As a writer Michael won critical aclaim for his work on the film "Tigerland" (also receiving an acting credit for the character Coogan).

The multi-talented McGruther is also the producer, writer and director for two in-production films, Ghost Town (2008 release) and Blood Son (aka Drink My Red Blood) (2008 release). Michael is definitely a talent worth watching. Good luck Michael.
